Germanna descendant, Apollo 11 astronaut and moonwalker Buzz Aldrin will visit with schoolchildren from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, November 7th at Germanna Community College’s Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper, VA, as part of an effort by his ShareSpace Foundation to inspire young children to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.
Buzz is descended from the Haeger, Rector and Fishback families.
After meeting with children in classrooms inside the Daniel Technology Center, Dr. Aldrin will help launch drones outside the Center and deliver a brief address on his Foundation’s efforts and his belief that NASA should revitalize the space program by sending a manned mission to Mars and that the U.S. should work toward establishing a colony on Mars.
While this event is not open to the general public, due to the Germanna Foundation’s history with establishing Germanna Community College 45 years ago (1969, the same year that Germanna descendant Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon) by donating the land to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and our long-standing relationship and support ever since, Germanna Foundation members and supporters are invited to attend along with Germanna Community College students, faculty and staff.
If you can, please join Germanna Board of Trustees President J. Marc Wheat, also a descendant of the Rev. Haeger, at this event on Friday to “welcome home” one of our era’s Germanna explorers.
