On Friday May 16, Historic Germanna unveiled and rededicated a new Department of Historic Resources Highway Marker at Salubria. This replaced the missing sign, that was damaged by a vehicle in 2021. The process started in September 2023 and culminated with the unveiling on Friday.
Mother Nature provided a beautiful overcast sky and a refreshing breeze, and the forecasted rain held off until well after the day concluded. Our attendees first gathered at the newly installed historic marker on the eastbound side of Route 3, where Historic Germanna staff officially unveiled Salubria’s marker.
After some photographs, the group migrated to Salubria’s boxwood ring, where guests enjoyed delicious refreshments. Soon after, guests settled down to hear remarks from Historic Germanna Executive Director Jennifer Hurst-Wender, Education Manager Shannon Doherty, and Board President Keith Hoffman, as well as some fascinating insights about Salubria’s Civil War history from eminent historian and preservationist Clark “Bud” Hall.
Thank you to all of our attendees who joined us for this special moment, including Culpeper County Board of Supervisor Representative, Susan Gugino of the Stevensburg District, Virginia Department of Transportation Historian Ann Miller, former president of the Orange County African American Historical Society Bruce Monroe, and Christopher Snider, Senior Adviser to Bryce Reeves, Virginia State Senator representing District 28. Other attendees included volunteers, friends, and longtime supporters of Historic Germanna and Salubria.
Special thanks to the Culpeper Media Network and Emily Oaks from Foothills Forum for documenting the event!
We are so grateful to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources for helping us on this journey. Having been missing for nearly four years, we are so excited that Salubria’s marker, reflecting updating historical scholarship, has returned to its rightful place.
