The Germanna Foundation is pleased to announce that the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) will conduct a field school hosted by the Germanna Foundation at its Fort Germanna and Enchanted Castle archaeological site in Locust Grove. VCU students (and others who apply and enroll through the University) will learn excavation techniques and help the Foundation’s archaeologist Dr. Eric Larsen, pictured above with Dr. Bernard Means of VCU at the Fort Germanna site, in the search for the boundaries of Fort Germanna.
“Working with Virginia Commonwealth University students in a field school environment is very exciting for our new archaeology program,” said Dr. Larsen. “There’s a lot to do to get ready,” he added.
To support this effort, the Germanna Foundation is hiring several part-time staff positions for this summer. For more information and application instructions, click on the positions here: Field Archaeology Assistant (1), Excavation Interns (4 p/t paid intern positions).
The Foundation’s archaeology program is supported through individual donations, including a generous pledge to underwrite the Foundation’s archaeologist position from Dr. Michael D. Frost, Kansas City, Missouri, a descendant of Governor Spotswood. Other major supporters include The Hitt Family Foundation and Russell and Joan Hitt, of Virginia, and the Fishback Family of Brookings, South Dakota, in honor of John Fishback who was a founder of the Germanna Colony and all of the Fishback descendants since. Many other Germanna descendants and friends of Germanna support the Foundation’s work as well.
