In 1969, the Germanna Foundation donated 100 acres of land to create a new community college in Virginia, which would become Germanna Community College.
Dr. Frank Turnage was president of Germanna Community College from 1986 to 2007. In 1996, he became a Trustee of the Germanna Foundation and later Executive Director from 2009-2011. It was during his tenure as Executive Director that he put into motion the transfer of the Fort Germanna/Enchanted Castle archaeological site to the Germanna Foundation from the Commonwealth of Virginia at the end of 2013 (see photos from transfer ceremony).
On Thursday it was announced that the Germanna Community College Locust Grove Campus, which sits next to the Germanna Foundation, will have a building named in his honor.
The Germanna Foundation is honored to have been a part of the early discussions on the design of the new building. Ideas that were discussed were to use green tech in the construction, large open spaces for conference-type events, and use of traditional cue in the modern design.
