What began as informal picnics at the site of the original Germanna settlement, reuniting descendants of the original settlers of the two Germanna colonies, became the genesis of the Germanna Foundation.
March 14, 2021, marks 65 years since its founding through the efforts of Brawdus Martin, Charles Herbert Hoffman, John Walter Wayland, Ernst Flender, Border Stanley, Trammel Fishback, Frank Switzer, and Jesse Boyd Carpenter.
In the last 65 years, Germanna has had a profound impact:
- Germanna Records published,
- conferences and reunions attended,
- the discovery of Alexander Spotswood’s Enchanted Castle,
- the hunt for the original 1714 Fort Germanna,
- the Hitt Archaeology Center,
- a Memorial Garden,
- the lush Siegen Forest,
- stewardship of:
- 1757 Salubria
- 1800 Peter Hitt Cabin,
- Fort Germanna Visitor Center
Your partnership, generosity, and engagement has made this incredible legacy possible!
As we look towards the next 65 years, we hope to:
- Become a nationally recognized center for studying Virginia’s early 18th-century culture and exploration;
- Expand upon the four diverse cultures that intersected at Germanna; Native Americans, the British, African, and German peoples;
- Use our historic and archaeological sites to explore the experiences and effects of these four groups’ migration, and;
- Begin to tell the story of their migration and impact on the founding and development of our great nation.
As the effects of COVID begin to wane, we urge you to support Germanna. In 2021, with your financial support, we hope to bring back more of our Public Access Days at Fort Germanna and Salubria and hold more public programming such as Salubria After Dark, and our Veterans Day Luminary Tribute.
The future is bright for your Germanna. Our founders’ plans and dreams continue to expand, and we believe they would be proud of the accomplishments and direction Germanna is going. On this historic Founders Day, remember to look back at all we have accomplished, remember those who came before us and look forward to an exciting future.
On this important day, please let us know why Germanna is important to you and what we can do to improve your experience.
We appreciate your consideration of making a special Founders Day gift in support of Germanna today. Contributions at any a level, whether $6,500, $650, $65 or any amount you can spare, will help us make 2021 a banner year.
Thank you for all you do to help us execute our impactful mission and preserve the precious historic properties entrusted to us as part of our nation’s historic legacy.
