New Germanna Record #22 Published: The Broyles Family

February 8, 2022 By Germanna Foundation 1 Comment

Broyles Family

The Germanna Foundation has recently published its 22nd book in the Germanna Record series—The Broyles Family: The First Four Generations by genealogist Cathi Clore Frost.

This genealogy chronicles the first four generations of descendants of 1717 immigrants John Broyles and his wife Ursula Ruop.

This in-depth, thoroughly researched volume updates information available in Keith’s circa 1940 manuscript and is well documented with over 12,000 source notes, a 31-page bibliography, and is indexed.

Family members intermarried with other Germanna Second Colony families such as Blankenbaker, Garr, Crisler, Wayland, Carpenter, Finks, Yager, Utz, Wilhoit, Fleshman, etc. making this book an invaluable addition to research of that interconnected group.

The 8.5″ x 11″ 720-page book can be purchased securely online for $65 at germanna.org/store/germanna-records/.

Introduction

Information contained in any published family genealogy is a snapshot of what is known by the author on the date of publication. Why not wait indefinitely for those elusive records? Why not concentrate on simply publishing via the electronic Database of Descendants? The Germanna Foundation could do those things and I certainly plan to keep updating the database with additional information and sources, however printed books provide assurance that information will not be lost to advancing technology. We are certainly grateful for previously published family histories as they contain bits of information that may otherwise have been lost.

The German ancestry of the Broyles family was researched and published over thirty years ago by Johni Cerny and Gary Zimmerman, both now deceased, in volume six of their Before Germanna series of booklets. This volume commences with Second (1717) Germanna Colony immigrants John Broyle and his wife Ursula Ruop. I double checked German records pertaining to this couple and their children born in Germany on microfilm at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City or online at Ancestry. Elke Hall double checked them on the Archion website, and she also translated all German records consulted.

About 1940, Arthur Leslie Keith produced a manuscript on the Broyles Family. Because the German origins were unknown, he began with the immigrant couple and worked forward through as many generations as possible. Unfortunately, the sources were not documented as thoroughly as is now expected and Keith relied heavily on correspondence and family tradition. Every effort has been made to remedy that absence of documentation by finding and documenting sources, when available. It appears that Keith’s correspondents were likely privy to private family records that are not available to the public or possibly are no longer in existence. His correspondents also had first-hand knowledge that is no longer available eighty years later. Cemeteries have been destroyed and gravestones have eroded, been buried, or disappeared.

There are advantages to researching eighty years later, however. The internet is the primary source of these advantages. Census records are one of my favorite research tools. More census years are available to the public, have been indexed, and are available online than could have been imagined in Keith’s day. Additional resources are available online through subscription websites such as Ancestry, free on the Family History Library’s FamilySearch website, and on state, local, and national archive websites. In addition, more descendants have researched and connected their lines, both improving the quality and sorting out previous errors. Genealogy software allows one to organize data and connect related individuals easily. Word processing programs allow for easy editing.

Modern research standards require a reasonably exhaustive search and that each piece of information that is not common knowledge be sourced. A reasonably exhaustive search is easier to complete with the early generations as there are fewer individuals, fewer localities necessary to conduct the search, and fewer surnames to be searched. As a family grows exponentially larger with each successive generation and migrates to new locations, the number of possible records becomes daunting.

An important part of evaluating the information you are reading in any family genealogy is the quality of the sources cited. The footnotes, endnotes, and bibliography are just as significant as the information presented. Please don’t overlook these valuable components. Derivative sources are placeholders until an original source is found. Primary information, created near the time of an event by someone with firsthand knowledge, is always preferable to secondary information. To assist with your evaluation of the material contained in this book, primary information confirmed with either original or select derivative sources and secondary information from original sources appears in regular font while secondary information from derivative sources appears in italics.

We publish to share knowledge.

I received my book this weekend! WOW! What a treasure trove of information? A HUGE, “Thank you”, to everyone who made this Broyles book possible! Time for me to go to work on getting the red flag off of Adam Broyles names with the DAR so that I can submit a supplemental application for him!
