Saturday, May 14, is Global Big Day. This annual event recognizes World Migratory Bird Day by inviting people, individually or in groups, to report citizen science bird observation data for scientists at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and other organizations. Data will be entered in Cornell’s eBird application. eBird can be downloaded for free from your app store.

The Germanna Foundation, in cooperation with the Old Rag Master Naturalists and the Central Rappahannock Master Naturalists, is hosting a field trip for the public to participate in a guided walk through our Siegen Forest to identify the birds that are here on our campus. Birds seen recently in the Siegen Forest include Louisiana waterthrush, eastern bluebird, brown thrasher, blue-gray gnatcatcher, bald eagle, and belted kingfisher. Our walk will be led by Master Naturalist Joella Killian from the Central Rappahannock MN chapter and Deanne Lawrence from the Old Rag Master Naturalist chapter from 9-11 am. The walk will be limited to 10 participants.
Accessibility: The trails are not paved and will include walking up and down hills both ways. They may be accessible to individuals using walking sticks but are not wheelchair accessible. Trails will be muddy if it rains the day before. Good walking shoes, a hat, bug spray and water are recommended for this walk.
